I've been busy making other things for awhile, but I finally got a huge new order of prints made from my first trip to Germany to attend Creativeworld in 2014. Heidelberg train Simple Stories Travel Notes
For this layout about my train journey from Frankfurt to Heidelberg for a day of touring, I grabbed a recent purchase that I couldn't wait to use - the new Simple Stories Travel Notes collection that I'd been in love with since I saw it announced before the winter shows. Originally, I intended this to be a brighter layout, but as I worked through it, I ended up focusing on the more muted tones in the collection (like blue, green, and brown) and avoiding heavy doses of the red and yellow that I found overwhelmed the photos.

I built this layout around the really strong photos from the train station and on the train. Along with the two pieces of memorabilia, it didn't leave me a lot of extra space to play with, so this layout is pretty lean on decoration.

Although the Simple Stories Travel Notes collection comes with a sheet of cut-apart 4" by 6" cards, I chose to make my own for the title card. I cut off the corner of one of the patterned papers to create my base. The rest of the design is very simple - a slash of washi tape, a word die for the main title, and then the labelmaker for the city. The date stamp got the date on the layout without much fuss.

I don't like gluing down memorabilia, so the WC ticket is loose in the pocket that I made for it. I just put a piece of pattern paper behind it to separate it from the page behind. And yes, that is a really bad "go" pun I was intentionally making with the journaling card sticker.

I also made my own journaling card using the same piece of paper that I cut for the title card. I stamped it with Hickory Smoke Distress Oxide, which is my new favorite gray ink. The effect on this paper was almost tone-on-tone. The "Go Some Where New" card was from a cut-apart sheet in the Simple Stories Travel Notes collection. I put it here to pull these colors across from the other page. It's also the 2nd piece of map print I managed to sneak on the page, along with the washi tape. (Trying to get map print on each page has something of my meme for this album.)
That's not an error photographing the layout that the photo of the train tracks and red lights is so blurry. That's how the original photo actually looks. Normally, I'd delete a photo this blurry. But occasionally, the effect is somewhat artistic. I really liked how this image captured the sunrise and the sense of being half-awake in the early morning hour. So I decided to use it instead of delete it.

All of the 3" x 4" cards on the right side of the layout are pre-designed cards from cut-apart sheet in the Simple Stories Travel Notes collection.The kraft colored journaling card carries the kraft color over that is on the other page to balance it. And notice I got some more map print in on the "Adventure" card!

My photos for this side of the layout weren't that great due to the low light and moving train, so I processed them to give them a slightly vintage feel.
I used my journaling card on this page to explain what the pictures were of, and also somewhat give background on what the intent was of the sunrise photo on the other page.

In the bottom corner, I made a pocket for my second piece of memorabilia - my train ticket. I cut the card behind from a piece of paper in the Simple Stories Travel Notes collection. I chose the seafoam color to balance the use of it on the other page, as well as in some of the photos. Then I created a title at the top with a piece of washi tape and a sticker. Like with the other memorabilia, I left it just floating in the pocket instead of gluing it down.
